Remember Nick
Remember Nick!
Nick was bigger than life. Nick Grogan was a son, second child of Margaret and John.
Nick was a brother, little brother to Andrea and big brother to Margo, John and Jennifer. Nick was my Brother.
Nick was a dad and father of two beautiful daughters, Meghan and Nicole.
Nick was a husband. Nick was THE love of Betty’s life.
Uncle Nicky, an inspiration for Natalie, Caitlin, John and Aidan, as well as the Governor of the coveted Uncle Nicky treat drawer.
Nick was a friend, to countless people, both on and off of the golf course.
Nick Grogan was a firefighter. An engineer. A member of Engine Company 106 (ret.). Everyone from the Chicago Fire Department that has worked with Nick will remember him well.
Nick was a Cubs fan (this explains a lot).
Nick taught us all lessons that will stay with us all of our lives. He understood that we all have set backs, but we don’t have to let those set backs stop us or get us down. WE CAN HOPE. WE CAN FIGHT ON. WE CAN SURVIVE. I think he got this perspective from his love of Ernie Banks, and the Cubs and the never-ending belief that they will win the World Series one day!
To remember Nick is just a joy. Nick has been and will always be my big brother. At one time or another he has been my protector, mentor, friend but always and foremost my big brother. In our adulthood, we talked more about our lives in a few hours than most siblings do in their entire lifetimes.
After learning he was diagnosed with lung cancer, we often talked about how little people know about this disease. Nick believed that there was not enough funding for lung cancer research because there were not enough survivors. The survival statistics surrounding the disease are brutal. He asked that, when I found the strength after his death, that I educate as many people as possible about the facts regarding lung cancer. He wanted me to tell people about the lack of funding, knowledge, and understanding of those affected by this disease.
I have found the strength. I join With Nick in a desire to put an end to the pain that lung cancer creates. Think about how many lives we could impact. How the number of survivors could increase just by developing earlier detection methods and supporting research for a cure. Nick ended his 13-month battle with lung cancer in February of 2007. His family and friends think about him and miss him every day. We are no different than any other who faces life without a loved one. Now it’s time for all of us to share his goal of educating the world about the dire need for research. Please make a donation in his memory. Your donation can help put an end to this killer and stop the needless loss of loved ones. Please Remember Nick!
Thank you,
Margo Grogan
