What made you decide to become a Fireman?
Chicago Firefighter/Paramedic James McGann says he gets the same rush from jumping out of an airplane that he does running into a burning building to try to save someone. "There has always been an interest in this field for me because while it looks very exciting you can still help people in their time of need." McGann has been a paramedic for thirteen years and has friends that became firemen before him. "One of my good friends asked me if I liked the rush of jumping out of an airplane, which I do; he told me it was the same rush running into a burning building to save lives." "From that point on I was sold." McGann says he will never forget that conversation." When asked if it really is like jumping out of an airplane, McGann says, even better!"
What is your idea of a perfect night out in Chicago?
It has to be summertime. For me nothing beats a day at the ballpark! Sixteen inch softball is a close second...especially a win!
If you could live anywhere other than Chicago where would that be?
Boston! I'm an American History buff and that city is loaded with history. It's also the greatest walking city in the states.
When you've had a tough day at the firehouse what do you do to relax?
I head straight to the gym to work off steam. Sometimes feeling good physically makes you feel good mentally.
Name something you have in your house from your childhood?
My baseball glove. It has more meaning and memories than anyone will ever know.
What makes someone a true Chicagoan?
Someone who can argue Cubs v. Sox or Bears v. Packers and still buy you a drink afterwards!
What's the thing you love most about being a fireman?
I love the team work, camaraderie, loyalty and knowing that you have a second family. It's the feeling of pride and honor you have for all those who have come before you.
