For the past several years it has become increasingly difficult to find products made by Union workers. With many companies moving out of the United States to cut salaries and production costs, just finding an American-made product, much less a Union-made one, has been quite a challenge.

The IAFF addressed this issue at our last convention and taken steps to make finding Union-made items a whole lot easier. Simply go to the IAFF homepage at http://www.iaff.org and click on the “Get It Union” banner for a guide to finding Union-made products.

We just lost two Brothers. This is a tragedy, and there are some people and companies that try to prey and profit on tragedy. We have all seen this, don't even get me started on how I feel about these parasites.

There is a company called Phoenix Graphics Online trying to sell memorial stickers for our Chicago Firefighter Line of Duty Deaths on their website and eBay. No profits are going to the families or fire dept charities.

Edward Stringer: 'He just loved being a fireman'

From WGN Chicago Breaking News. From shoveling his elderly neighbor's sidewalk to helping workers at his favorite campsite, Edward Stringer wasn't one to turn his back on those in need, a trait that served him well as a Chicago firefighter for more than a decade.

"He loved it," said a former girlfriend, Michelle Field. "His favorite saying was, 'People make fun of me because most people are running away from a burning building and I'm the one running in.' He loved his job. He would do anything."

His commitment to duty ultimately led to his death Wednesday morning when a brick wall in a fiery, abandoned South Side building collapsed on him, fatally injuring him and another firefighter, Corey Ankum, 34.

Stringer, 47, was the father of two adult children. He owned an older beagle, named Roscoe.

"Anybody who knew Ed will remember him for his kindness, just being the person that he was," Field said. "He made people laugh."

News of his death rippled down the Southwest Side street where he lived and all the way into rural Wilmington in southern Will County, where Stringer camped on days off since 1996.

"He was a good guy. He helped people," said Monica Murdaugh, manager of the campground, Lakepoint Club. "(His death has) affected a lot of us."

Stringer, who was divorced, had a side job as a home inspector, but firefighting was his passion, friends said.

He was a "real man and a damn good fireman," said a comrade at Engine 63, where Stringer worked. A shift commander there described the scene inside the station as brokenhearted. Firefighters, the commander said, were in mourning.

One firefighter who knew Stringer said of him: "Crazy as all get out. You talk about somebody that was a firecracker around the firehouse -- a lot of fun. I'm going to tell you right now, if you couldn't catch, you couldn't work with Eddie, because Eddie was bringing it. He was bringing it."

He said that Stringer was in a motorcycle accident a while back and was out of work for a lengthy period, costing him his spot on the truck he was then on.

Stringer was from Arkansas, said Field, who met him through an online dating site about 10 years ago. The two dated for about two years, and remained good friends, she said.

Field said she had talked to him Tuesday evening when Stringer called to let her know she had mail waiting for her at a home she had sold to a mutual friend.

"He sounded the same as always. Ed's Ed. He was a very happy person," Field said

He had two children, Field said: a son, Edward, who lived in Ohio, and a daughter, Jennifer, who lived in the area and whom he would take on camping trips, Murdaugh said.

In his free time, Stringer would hop on his motorcycle and head to Wilmington to escape into the country and clear his head from the stress of the city and his job.

He'd park next to the office and retreat to his trailer on the campground, a popular getaway for police officers and firefighters. Murdaugh said she heard the news about Stringer's death Wednesday morning.

He "loved this place," she said, her voice cracking.

At his home, Stringer's neighbors stopped by to comfort his daughter, who was there with Field and Field's fiance. Emotional embraces were exchanged, and Field's fiance hung a U.S. flag at half-staff on the porch. Another neighbor planted a small U.S. flag on her lawn.

An elderly woman who lived near Stringer said she had been following the news reports of the 3-11 fire and had hoped Stringer wasn't among those killed or injured.

"He just loved being a fireman. He was friendly," she said. "He would shovel my walk every morning at 5 a.m."

Kristen Schorsch, Steve Schmadeke and Cynthia Dizikes contributed to this report.

Corey Ankum: 'He was a natural born leader'

From WGN, Chicago Breaking News. Corey Ankum, who recently completed his first year on one of Chicago's busiest tower-ladder firetrucks, had planned an unforgettable Christmas for his wife and three children.

Ankum, a former police officer and high school basketball standout from Lynwood, switched shifts so he could have the holiday off, family said. He planned to deep-fry a turkey, watch his 1-year-old son, Torey, zoom around in his gift -- a kid-size electric truck -- and, to top it off, surprise his wife, Dameka, with a new Porsche sport-utility vehicle with a red bow on top.

His older sister, Charmain Ankum, 38, knew something was wrong when he didn't call her after his shift ended about 7 a.m. Wednesday so he could drop off the kids' presents for her to wrap.

The family soon learned that Ankum, 34, died when he was trapped in rubble after a vacant South Side building caught fire and collapsed.

Firefighters and family had conflicting accounts on whether Ankum was inside or on the rear roof when it caved in, causing a side wall to fall.

"It looked like some (stuff) out of a ... war movie," one firefighter said, describing the scene as dozens of first responders dug through the smoking debris, looking for fallen firefighters.

Inside a private room at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ankum's mother cried out, "Don't tell me my son's dead!" family said. Firefighters openly wept or even vomited upon hearing the news that Ankum, whom a colleague described as a "natural born leader," had died.

"I know God don't do stuff without having a purpose behind it, but I do feel he was taken too soon," said Charmain Ankum, who added that the family was "proud but sad" of her brother's sacrifice. "His son just started walking."

"We knew it was kind of rough -- every day your life is on the line," said Andrew Crooms, 32, a close family friend. "He's a good dude, and he's going to be missed. There's a lot of emotions -- Christmas is right around the corner."

Ankum grew up around 92nd and Green streets and moved with his family to Lynwood when he was about 14. He played football and baseball but excelled at basketball, a sport he still loved playing. He also enjoyed cooking and drawing.

Family said that, after graduating from Thornton Fractional South High School, he played basketball at area colleges and later graduated from Kendall College. He decided to take both the Chicago police and fire tests and was accepted first by the Police Department.

Ankum spent about a year as a patrol officer in the South Chicago District, family said, but, after the Fire Department told him it had a probationary spot, he decided to move to what he thought was a less dangerous job.

"He actually switched over because he thought it was safer, and he didn't want his wife to be up worrying as much as she was when he was on the force," Charmain said.

Ankum married Dameka, whom he met after she enrolled her daughter at a Chicago day care the Ankum family used to run, about three years ago. Dameka, who works as a secretary in Mayor Richard Daley's office, has two daughters, Baylee, 10, and Demia, 13.

The family lives in a brick home in Chatham. Family member and fellow firefighter Gerald Glover bought a brick bungalow across the street about two months ago so the two men could help keep an eye on each other's children.

The two planned to surprise Dameka with a Porsche Cayenne for Christmas, complete with a red bow on top, just like in the Christmas television commercials.

"We were going to bring it here and put it in my garage, put a big bow on it and then on Christmas, he was going to bring her across the street and surprise her," Glover said. "She would have been happy. That's the type of stuff that (he'd) do for her."

The block where Glover and Corey's families live swelled Wednesday afternoon as family and supporters came to pay their respects. His children and other close family went to Ankum's mother's house, where people filed in and out, some carrying food.

At Ankum's firehouse, where purple bunting hung over the garage doors, the mood was somber. Ankum had a reputation as a hardworking, smart and friendly firefighter.

Kevin Betton, a firefighter EMT instructor, said his "heart fell" when he learned that Ankum, who he'd recently had in class, was gone.

"Corey was one of those people who could light up a room with a smile," Betton said. "He was a natural born leader."

Cynthia Dizikes and Liam Ford contributed to this report.

Department of Justice Information

The U.S. Justice Department notified Local 2 today, August 17, 2010, that they have received the Test results and Technical Report for the Fire Lieutenant Exam.

As most of you know, because of a Consent decree dating back to 1980 the City of Chicago must submit certain items regarding the testing procedures to the U.S. Justice Department for review. The Department Of Justice has 45 days to either reject it or do nothing. The 45 day time period does not start until ALL the items needed for review have been submitted. As of today, all of the items have NOT been submitted.

They could not give me a time table, they said, it could be 2 days or 2 months. Again the 45 day clock does not start until all items have been received from the City of Chicago.

A Statement from the family of Firefighter Paramedic Chris Wheatley

The family of fallen firefighter Christopher Wheatley released a statement Monday night, calling Wheatley, who fell to his death while battling a blaze at a West Loop restaurant, a man who loved people and loved the Chicago Fire Department.

The Wheatley family will not be doing any interviews or media appearances at this time, according to the statement, and they have asked that news organizations refrain from contacting by phone or visit.

The statement from the Wheatley family, which was released through the Fire Department, is as follows:

"Chris lived his life to the fullest; he put everything he had into both work and play. He loved his family more than anyone can ever know. He loved people he had known all his life and was just as caring for those he had just met. He was a fantastic son, brother, brother in law, cousin, nephew, friend and firefighter.

"He loved not only his friends and family but those he served in the city of Chicago and well as his fire department brothers and sisters. Chris’ mother, Mary Wheatley says the loss of her son is a hole that can never be filled but she is comforted by his memory and his impact on the lives of others and will always remember that he helped and touched so many in his life and career.

His fiancée Jessica wants everyone to know that Chris was a man who always had a smile on his face and he made her laugh each and everyday. She says; 'I was lucky to have him in my life. He was a true beacon of life, laughter and love. He loved all of us and made sure he told us everyday.' She adds that, 'He will never be forgotten. He died doing what he loved. He was the most generous and loyal man I have ever known, and he lived his life as an example to others.' She called him her 'Mr. Chicago' who was in love with the traditions and people of the Chicago Fire Department.

His sister Kim and brother-in-law Chris Skubic want everyone to know that Chris always dreamed of becoming a Chicago Firefighter. 'He always told us to spend our lives living our dreams and loving those around us.' Chris loved his teams as well as his friends and family. He was a devoted Cubs and Blackhawks fan and was an 'intense' Chicago Bears supporter.

The family requests privacy at this time. Please allow us to remember our family member and grieve our loss."

Services are pending but should be Thursday and Friday, according to the family.

Chicago firefighter killed on duty will 'always be part of our team'
August 9, 2010

Arrangements are expected to be Thursday and Friday.

Please visit In Memory of Firefighter Chris Wheatley Facebook page here.

Christopher Wheatley was doing what firefighters do -- climbing a ladder, weighed down with gear, moving toward smoke instead of away -- when he slipped and fell 35 feet to his death.

It was a gut shot to the Chicago Fire Department, the first time in more than a decade one of its firefighters has died battling a blaze. And when Ambulance 15 carried Wheatley's body to the morgue early today, dozens of fire vehicles and police cars lined the streets, their lights flashing as officers along the route silently saluted.

"It's hard to put into words. I'm still digesting it," said Dan Zeller, who works out of a firehouse across the street from Wheatley's West Side condominium. "He's one of us. It couldn't hit any closer to home."

Shortly after midnight, Wheatley and other firefighters had responded to a grease-chute fire at Avec restaurant on Randolph Street in the West Loop. He was climbing the building's fire-escape ladder carrying an air tank, a water pump that weighed more than 40 pounds and a tool used to pry open doors.

"They had to go up to the roof to open the area where the grease chute extended through," said fire Commissioner Robert Hoff, his voice wavering with emotion. "Firefighter Christopher Wheatley was making his way up to the roof on a ladder that was attached to the building, carrying his equipment. Apparently he slipped and fell to the ground, causing critical injuries. They worked to save his life, but it was too late."

Wheatley, 31, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:19 a.m.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said damage to the restaurant was minimal. Early indications are that Wheatley lost his footing on the fire escape's ladder, Langford said, but fire officials will fully review the incident Tuesday.
Friends and fellow firefighters said Wheatley's dream was to be a firefighter, a dream he achieved in 2008 after eight years as a paramedic in Romeoville and Chicago.

"He was young, he was strong, he was aggressive," said firefighter Brian Reese. "We're going to miss his strength, his enthusiasm. The way he brought a smile to the firehouse will be missed."

Wheatley's family said in a statement: "Chris lived his life to the fullest; he put everything he had into both work and play. He loved his family more than anyone can ever know. He loved people he had known all his life and was just as caring for those he had just met."

The last Chicago firefighter to die on duty was William Grant, who was killed in 2007 en route to a call when the fire engine he was in collided with a bus and flipped over. The last time Chicago firefighters died while battling a fire was February 1998, when Patrick King and Anthony Lockhart were killed while trying to stop a blaze in a Beverly tire store.

The rarity of such deaths made it even harder for firefighters who knew Wheatley to make sense of the tragedy.

"It's not going to be easy," said firefighter Scott Buckley, who worked with Wheatley. "He'll always be part of our team. ... He'll never be replaced."

Zeller recalled the times he would relieve Wheatley of duty at the firehouse, getting information about the previous watch, then laughing and joking about Wheatley's favorite topic, the Chicago Bears. Wheatley was a big sports fan and a Bears season-ticket holder. His Facebook page features a picture of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler with the word "Hope" underneath.

Zeller said he and Wheatley hit it off because both were paramedics who "crossed over" to become firefighters.

"He did his best at it, and it was a real tragedy and it could happen to any one of us," Zeller said. "You never want to go home without a guy in the rig."

At the Lawndale fire station where Wheatley worked for several years as a paramedic, Kevin McDermott said the fallen firefighter showed him the ropes while both were attending the fire academy. McDermott said Wheatley distinguished himself as a joker and a "full-of-life kind of guy" who snapped back to work whenever the bell rang.

"The academy is pretty serious, but when we had a little break, he had a little joke or two to lighten the mood," McDermott said. "He was almost goofy in a good way. But when it came to work at drills, he was serious."

Wheatley became a firefighter and paramedic in Romeoville in January 2000 after graduating from a paramedic program at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, said Russell Slagle, who mentored and trained Wheatley in Romeoville. Wheatley left in May 2001 for a paramedic's job with the Chicago Fire Department.

Slagle took solace in the fact that Wheatley had followed his life's passion.

"The love of his life was becoming a fireman," said Slagle, also a close friend. "He actually died doing what he loved to do."

Wheatley grew up in Lemont, played football at Lemont High School and ranked 30th out of 203 students in his 1997 graduating class, according to school officials.

Denise Dalton, a guidance counselor at the high school who taught Wheatley as a sophomore, said he was "more than just a kid on a football team." She said he founded a club with fellow teammates called Athletes Committed to Excellence. They were role models for younger students and taught them the importance of not drinking and making healthy choices.

"He just had one of those attitudes that he did whatever was asked of him with a smile on his face," Dalton said.

Deanese Williams-Harris, Dawn Rhodes, Rex W. Huppke and Pat Curry contributed to this report.

Together, we need to raise $2200. Help us reach our goal by joining us for a night of cocktails and karaoke (if you're brave enough :) ). The evening will feature a number of drink specials, and a split the pot raffle. To help with our cause, you can make a charitable donation at the door- any amount will be appreciated.
FMGC Members, Friends;

The door is red and the ceiling is black - All signs of the progress of Your Fire Museum at 5218 So. Western Ave. I would hope that the word gets around to ALL members of the CFD and Suburban Depts. that the Board of Directors has hopes of opening in the spring of ’10.

Many thanks to the CFD American Legion Post #667 for the donation of a wheelchair for handicapped visitors and our own Jerry Gonzalez for his painting skill. It seems that every few days we are contacted by interested members or families that donate memorabilia for display. The event of Nov. 14th re/ Fireboats and Cherry Mine disaster was a huge success and more events are planned.

My main subject of this newsletter is that the CFD Charities is now a reality. By the time you receive this winter edition you should have the City of Chicago Charity booklet that is being distributed with paychecks to all city employees. Harris Bank will furnish us with similar applications and hopefully the whole world will contribute to these good causes i.e. Fire Chaplains Ministry; Fire Museum of Greater Chicago and the 5/11 Canteen Service.

I urge one and all to take advantage of this payroll deduction offer so that we can continue our devotion to the Fire Service.
