The events surrounding the deadly fire at 260 E. Chestnut clearly illustrate once again the need for all Chicago Fire and EMS companies to be fully staffed at all times. The safety of the brave men and women who are called upon to respond to these extreme incidents, oftentimes under horrible and very dangerous conditions, as well as the safety of the public, can never be compromised.
The citizens of Chicago must know that when tragedy strikes and they need to dial 911 there will always be the full number of fire companies and ambulances, fully staffed with our highly trained first responders, ready to mitigate any danger.
Additionally, when catastrophes such as this tragic fire occur and resources from all parts of the city are called in to aid in the response and rescue effort, the outlying areas must also be protected at all times. Any reduction in staffing levels or elimination of fire companies could leave these areas under-protected and vulnerable.
